SPELLING
Spelling words are found on our Fourth Grade Focus Newsletter that goes home on Fridays. Students who have difficulty with weekly spelling tests will need to practice more at home. Spelling counts for only 10% of the total grade for the nine weeks. LANGUAGE/GRAMMAR We are using Mentor Sentences as the basis for grammar this year. Each week we will read a Mentor Book (a book that is well written) and pull one sentence out. These mentor sentences are those that clearly illustrate a grammar rule or figurative language element. This way, students can make observations, identify the components, analyze their impact, and write their own version. We will have a quiz each Friday, the majority of points will come from the students being able to identify mistakes in the sentence we have talked about all week. The remaining portion of the quiz will focus on a grammar rule. Language/Grammar/Writing counts for 90% of the students total grade for the nine weeks. WRITING We will be focusing on different types of writing this year. We will begin with Opinion Writing. We will learn the elements of how it looks and work our way to writing our own opinion pieces. |
